Recovery
Dental anxiety is real — and it shouldn't stand between you and the care you need. At Keheewin Family Dental, we offer compassionate sedation dentistry options to help you relax and receive treatment comfortably in a calm, stress-free environment. Everyone deserves a healthy smile, and fear doesn't have to be a barrier.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses safe, carefully chosen medications to minimize anxiety, reduce discomfort, and create a more relaxed experience during dental procedures. It's particularly beneficial for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, heightened sensitivity, or those who need multiple or complex procedures completed.
We personalize our approach to each patient — considering your anxiety level, medical history, and the nature of the treatment — to recommend the most appropriate sedation option. Our dentists are thoroughly trained in sedation administration and patient monitoring throughout every procedure.
- Reduces or eliminates dental anxiety and fear
- Allows complex or multiple procedures to be completed in fewer visits
- Suitable for adults and children with special considerations
- Multiple levels of sedation available to match your individual needs
With sedation dentistry, many patients have little to no memory of their procedure — allowing them to receive the care they've been putting off, comfortably and without distress.
Sedation Options We Offer
We offer a range of sedation levels so that your experience can be precisely tailored to your comfort needs and the complexity of your treatment.
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — inhaled through a small mask; creates a relaxed, calm feeling while you remain conscious; effects wear off within minutes
- Oral conscious sedation — a pill taken before your appointment; creates deeper relaxation while you remain awake and responsive
- IV sedation — administered through a vein for more profound relaxation; you may have little memory of the procedure
- General anaesthesia — used in specific situations for complete unconsciousness; patients are closely monitored throughout
What to Expect During Your Sedation Appointment
Your sedation journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. We review your complete medical history, discuss your anxiety level and concerns, and explain your treatment plan and the recommended sedation option in full detail.
On the day of your procedure, our team monitors your vital signs throughout and ensures you remain comfortable from start to finish. For oral and IV sedation, you'll need a trusted adult to drive you home.
- Medical history review and full discussion of sedation options
- Continuous monitoring of vital signs throughout your appointment
- A calm, judgment-free environment — no pressure, no rush
- Detailed post-procedure instructions tailored to the sedation you received
Recovery After Sedation
Recovery time varies depending on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide wears off very quickly — most patients can drive themselves home after nitrous. Oral and IV sedation take longer to clear and require a driver and a period of rest.
- Nitrous oxide: effects resolve within minutes; no driving restrictions
- Oral sedation: drowsiness can last several hours; plan for a rest day
- IV sedation: avoid driving and strenuous activity for 24 hours
- All sedation types: follow the specific post-procedure instructions provided
Common
Questions
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes — sedation dentistry is safe when administered by trained professionals. We conduct a thorough medical history review before recommending any sedation, monitor your vital signs continuously throughout your appointment, and are prepared to respond to any situation.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
It depends on the type of sedation. With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you remain conscious but very relaxed. IV sedation produces deeper relaxation with limited memory of the procedure. General anaesthesia results in full unconsciousness.
What are the potential side effects of sedation?
Side effects vary by type. Nitrous oxide may cause mild lightheadedness or tingling. Oral and IV sedation can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, or a brief feeling of grogginess. All effects are temporary and resolve on their own.
Is sedation dentistry covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance plan and the reason for sedation. Some plans cover sedation for specific procedures or for patients with documented anxiety or special needs. We can review your coverage and provide a clear cost estimate during your consultation.
